To give hackers something to do in every mission, each map hosts Infinity-standard consoles, which award some points for being hacked. To prevent easy hacking for points, the Shadowbacker avatars can't interact with the consoles directly unless your boss sticks a router into them them - and he only carries one. Living hackers have no such issues.
